Kathmandu: The auspicious occasion of Nagpanchami is being joyously observed today, characterized by the veneration of the Naga or serpent deity. As per Hindu customs, many individuals affix images of the Naga on their front doors during this festival.

Annually celebrated on the fifth day of Shrawan Shukla in accordance with the Lunar calendar, Nagpanchami holds deep religious significance. A prevalent belief holds that adorning a serpent image within the household safeguards against potential harm from snakes, scorpions, as well as fire and lightning incidents. Renowned theologian and member of the Nepal Calendar Determination Committee, Prof Dr. Debmani Bhattarai, corroborates this understanding.

The practice of Naga worship traces its origins to the Vedic era. In Vedic traditions, the Naga is revered as the sovereign of serpents. Devotees converge at Naga temples in the Kathmandu Valley, including Nagpokhari, Taudaha, and Nagdaha, to pay homage on this significant day.
